The Yakovlev Yak-130 was developed jointly with Aermacchi of Italy through 2000 when each company decided to proceed with its own version of the aircraft.  While both aircraft have similar appearances, they do not share any components.

The Yak-130 is used as a training aircraft that will enable new pilots to fly the latest generation of Russian fighter aircraft. In addition it can be equipped as a light attack aircraft. Yak-130 avionics include electronic counter measures and non-communications signals intelligence.

The cockpit of the Yak-130 is pressurized, air conditioned, all glass, all digital, with two or three multifunction monitors and a head-up displays both front and rear. Ejection seats are the latest "zero altitude".

The Yak-130 can be equipped with short and medium range ordnance. Aircraft automated systems can simulate a variety of combat situations.

The high use of composites in the Yak-130 give it a light, strong airframe that is anticipated to have a 30 year life.

Russia intends to purchase a minimum of 72 Yak-130 aircraft for its air force. To date 12 aircraft have been delivered with one lost. Algeria contracted for 16 of the aircraft, of which 3 are currently operational, and Syria has contracted for 36 aircraft with deliveries expected to begin in 2014. Vietnam has contracted for eight aircraft. Libya ordered 6 aircraft, but later canceled the contract.
