The Dassault Mirage III prototype first took flight in November of 1956. A total of 1,442 were since produced. No other European fighter aircraft has been built in such numbers. It was the first French aircraft to exceed Mach 2 in level flight.

The Mirage III was deployed with the French Air Force in 1961. Its excellent performance attracted the attention of other air forces around the world. Both Israel and South Africa started flying the Mirage III soon thereafter.

Mirage III fighter/interceptor aircraft were equipped with the Cyrano Al radar, a pair of 30 mm cannons, and air-to-air missiles.

Another version of the Mirage III was equipped with all weather avionics and used primarily in the ground attack role.

In addition to being built in France, the Mirage IIIE was built under license in Australia and Switzerland.

The Mirage III is no longer deployed by France. However, it is still deployed by many air forces around the world. Switzerland and Brazil have upgraded their aircraft and added small canards to their fronts.
