The C-54 cargo transport, produced by Douglas and named the Skymaster is probably best known as the aircraft used by the president of the United States. It was the first to have the call sign "Air Force One" while carrying the president.

The C-54 was the first four-engined aircraft employed in the Berlin Airlift. It was used during WW II and the Korean War by both the United States and Great Britain. In addition to the deliveries of people and cargo, it also flew numerous search and rescue missions. By the time the Korean War ended, the C-54 had been exported to over thirty U.S. allies around the world.

After the War, the C-54 became the primary airliner used by Pan American Airways on flights from New York to London. Later, regularly scheduled flights took off between California and New Zealand.

A total of 1,170 C-54 aircraft were produced between 1942 and 1947.
