Ethiopian Airlines Group has opened three new maintenance facilities in Addis Ababa aimed at expanding its technical capabilities and boosting third-party MRO services across Africa.
The more than $150 million investment includes a two-bay general maintenance hangar, a component repair workshop and a central warehouse. Construction was completed over three years in partnership with China National Aero-Technology International Engineering Corporation, China Communications Construction Company and DAR Al-Handasah Consultants.
Ethiopian now has eight hangars in Addis Ababa, enhancing its capacity for full-scale aircraft maintenance.
The 15,000 m2 (approximately 161,000 ft.2) warehouse includes an automated storage and retrieval system for refining spare parts management and streamlining maintenance operations.
The facilities were officially inaugurated on July 22 during a ceremony attended by Ethiopian Airlines management and government officials, including Group CEO Mesfin Tasew and Chairman Yilma Merdasa.
Ethiopian MRO Services currently offers FAA-approved repair for more than 1,200 components. The new workshop adds over 170 capabilities, covering Boeing 737 and De Havilland Q400 main and nose landing gear, avionics test equipment, air cycle machines and integrated drive generators.
“The completion of these advanced MRO facilities significantly enhances our technical capability and reinforces our position as a key player on the global stage,” Tasew said. “With expanded capabilities and cutting-edge systems, we are now better equipped to deliver efficient, high-quality maintenance services for both our growing fleet and third-party operators.”
Ethiopian Airlines’ latest MRO expansion signals a major upgrade to its technical operations. It anticipates this enhancement will boost internal fleet support and position the MRO provider to meet rising demand from regional and international operators.
