American Airlines is expanding its international footprint with the launch of six new routes in summer 2026, including the only nonstop service between the U.S. and Budapest, Hungary, and a new link to Prague.
The carrier will also bolster its transatlantic and South American networks with new or expanded service to Athens, Milan, Zurich and Buenos Aires, while increasing premium seating capacity to Tokyo from both Dallas-Fort Worth and Los Angeles.
From May 21, 2026, American will begin daily seasonal service from Philadelphia to Budapest and Prague, marking the airline’s entry into two previously unserved Central European markets. The additions, both using Boeing 787-8 aircraft, bring the number of transatlantic destinations served from its Philadelphia hub to 20.
The move into Budapest fills a notable gap in the North America–Hungary market, which has been without direct service since LOT Polish Airlines ended its Budapest–New York JFK route in September 2022. The airport has since prioritized restoring U.S. connectivity.
While American will not be the only North American airline serving Prague—as Delta Air Lines flies to the Czech capital from New York JFK and Air Canada offers summer service from Toronto Pearson—it will become the sole U.S. carrier to offer nonstop flights from Philadelphia.
American will also begin daily seasonal flights from Dallas-Fort Worth to Athens on May 21, offering its fifth U.S. gateway to the Greek capital. The route joins existing services from New York JFK, Chicago, Philadelphia and Charlotte. Meanwhile, Miami will gain daily year-round flights to Milan from March 29, complementing existing seasonal flights to Rome.
From May 21 to Aug. 4, American will operate limited-time summer service between Dallas-Fort Worth and Zurich. The airline is also extending its seasonal Dallas-Fort Worth to Buenos Aires flights into summer and adding frequencies between Miami and the Argentine capital. It says the additions will better serve fans attending the FIFA World Cup, taking place across the U.S., Canada and Mexico.
Additionally, American is further ramping up its Asia network with increased premium seating to Tokyo Haneda. Beginning March 29, it will operate a daily 777-300ER from Dallas-Fort Worth and 2X-daily 777-200ER service from Los Angeles.
