NOTE: RADIO CONTROL AIRPLANES ARE ON THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE PAGE.

Formed on Nov. 7, 1992, the Turkish Stars fly eight Northrop F-5 aircraft, making them one of the few aerobatic teams to fly aircraft capable of supersonic speeds.  Click here for the F-5 history, pictures, wav sound, specifications and radio control airplanes.

The tradition of the Turkish Stars aerobatic team can be traced back to 1914. This is when Turkish Army aircraft pilots began performing aerobatics to please spectators.

In 1926 the official Turkish Flight school was established. At the school Turkish pilots would learn maneuvers they would use while performing before crowds throughout the world.

The Turkish Stars aerobatic teams switched from propeller to jet aircraft in 1952 with the F-84G Thunderjet. In 1955 the F-84 was replaced by the F-86E Sabre.

In 1964 the Turkish Stars team increased the number of aircraft flown to a total of twelve F-84 aircraft.

The aircraft that the Turkish Stars currently fly, the F-5A Freedom Fighter was introduced in 1971. After a number of years the team was disbanded, only to be formed again on November 7, 1992 flying a six aircraft formation.

On March 30, 2004 the Turkish Stars performed with eight Northrop F-5 aircraft for the first time.

Radio Control Airplanes:

We find it interesting that the single engine variant of the F-5, the F-20, is so widely modeled as a RC Airplane although only three of the aircraft were ever produced by Northrop.

Pictured immediately above is the Northrop F-20 RC Airplane in Turkish Stars Colors from Phoenix Models.  The radio control airplane is sold as a ARF.  Wing span of the RC Airplane is 57" and length is 53".  You can power the radio control airplane with a .40 - .46 two cycle or .52 four cycle engine in the nose.  All up weight of the RC Airplane will be around 6 lbs.

The first picture below is of another F-20 radio control airplane.  This RC Airplane is sold by HET-RC.  The EDF radio control airplane has a wing span of 31.5" and a length of 45.6".  Recommended power for the RC Airplane is a Typhoon EDF 2W motor driving a WeMoTec 480 Mini Fan.

The second picture below is the F-20 radio control airplane from Juno RC.  Their RC Airplane comes from a kit and has a wing span of 47" and a length of 54".  A .40 to .50 engine is needed in the nose of the radio control airplane.  All up weight of the RC Airplane should be around 5 lbs.

The last picture on this page is of the F-20 radio control airplane by ICARE.  Wing span of the RC Airplane is 28" and fuselage length is 30".  Recommended power for the RC Airplane is a Mega 16/7/3 - 4 motor driving the included fan.

RC International has a Turkish Stars type F-5 radio control airplane. Wing span of the RC Airplane is 66" and it is 112" long.  The radio control airplane weighs about 35 lbs. and needs at least a 26 lb. thrust turbine to power it.

If you want to fly silently, the Canterbury Sailplanes F-20 slope soaring RC Airplane may be just the ticket for you.  The span of the radio control airplane is 33" and it is 32" long.

The Thorjet Turkish Stars F-5 RC Airplane kit has a 41" or 48" wing span.  Power can be from a .91 DF engine or a Turbine sufficient to power the 12 lb. weight of the radio control airplane.

Parkjets has a couple of plans for the F-20 RC Airplane on its web site you may want to check out.

Have you built a Turkish Stars F-5 or F-20 radio control airplane in Turkish Stars colors?  If you have, or would like to recommend RC Airplane plans, a kit or ARF of the F-5 or F-20, please email us.
