What is commonly referred to as the Space Shuttle is a combination of vehicles that NASA, the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration, has used to transport people and cargo to the edge of space, circling the earth. The first launch was in 1981.
The Space Shuttle consists of a airplane-like aircraft that holds people called the "Orbiter". A 154 foot long, 28 foot diameter orange color tank holds the fuel used by the Space Shuttle to achieve lift off and orbit. Two 149 foot long, 12 foot diameter cylinders call
boosters, containing the rocket motors are used to propel the craft during its launching. The fuel tank and boosters are jettisoned after the fuel is used up during the launch. While the boosters are parachuted for a soft landing and reuse, the fuel tank is discarded.
The Space Shuttle Orbiter has three smaller rocket motors it uses for maneuvering and to slow its rotation speed down in order to leave orbit. Once the Orbiter has left orbit, it glides back without any engine power to its landing destination on earth.
A total of six Orbiter vehicles were built. Two were lost while flying and one was used as a prototype test vehicle. A Space Shuttle Orbiter is on display at the Smithsonian.

The first aircraft pictured above is of Sheri holding the rc Space Shuttle scale model rocket for sale by CJS Aviation. It is 1/62 scale, 34" long, and made from Depron. Power comes from a G80 motor.
Pictured first below is the launch of the scale model rc Space Shuttle rocket for sale by Estes. It is 13 1/2" long. A C6-3 is the recommended motor. Although no longer produced, it can often be
found on eBay.
The second picture below is of Gyronuts aka Bill of RC Groups launching his rc Space Shuttle pusher prop model. It weighs around 22 oz.
The third picture below was posted to RC Groups by Scott Todd. It is a 1/40 giant scale rc Space Shuttle model rocket launch. The model was designed by a group of aerospace engineers.
Pictured last is the rc Space Shuttle EDF for sale by EJF.com. It is 1/36 scale with a wingspan of 26". Power comes from a 64 mm EDF unit.
Please email us if you know of a rc Space Shuttle that should be on this page.
