NOTE: THE RC PITTS SPECIAL IS ON THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE PAGE.

Pitts Aerobatics Co., now Aviat Aircraft, produced their first aerobatic Pitts Special in 1971. This was followed by a succession of high performance aircraft culminating with the Pitts Special S-2C.

Pitts Special aircraft are known for their aerobatic abilities. In fact, in the United States, Pitts Special aircraft have won the most unlimited aerobatic competitions.

Their latest Pitts Special is an improved variant of their best selling S-2B model. Changes were made to the ailerons to improve response and roll rate. Wing tips and tail surfaces were redesigned so the aircraft would require a lighter stick pressure. This would remain the same whether performing inside or outside maneuvers. A new Hartzell propeller now pulls the aircraft. See through Plexiglas has replaced the standard cockpit floor. A more streamlined canopy is said to add 12 mph to the aircraft's top speed.

Pilots who have flown in Pitts Special aircraft tell us that one only has to think about where they are pointing the aircraft and it will fly there. Ground handling is excellent for a tail dragger, with a very direct steering feel. The power to weight ratio of the aircraft makes for fantastic acceleration. Despite all of the power, a surprisingly light amount of right peddle pressure is all that is necessary to keep the aircraft tracking in a straight line during take off. Climb rate is a war bird like 3,000 fpm! New C model pilots who are used to flying the B model will immediately notice that they only need to use about half as much aileron force. Hands-off, sustained, level inverted flight needs just a touch of down trim. The aircraft is very easy to control in all attitudes, including spins, with no handling surprises. To the uninitiated, landing a Pitts Special is a challenge. However, it can be mastered with time and practice.

A Pitts Special is on display at the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C.
