The Nieuport 28 differed from previous Nieuport fighting scout models in that the lower wing was enlarged to be almost as large as the top wing. The aircraft were produced in France.
The aircraft were flown by the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. It first flew on June 14, 1917. On April 14, 1918, during only the second combat mission with the Expeditionary Force, two Nieuport 28 aircraft had victories over enemy aircraft.
U.S. World War I ace Eddie Rickenbacker first flew the aircraft. Although it had a smaller turning radius than other aircraft of the time, it was slower, did not climb as well, and tended to be less durable.
A total of about 300 Nieuport 28 aircraft were produced. After the war a number of the aircraft continued serving around the world.
