Nieuport 11 aircraft are perhaps the best known of the Nieuport fighting scout series of aircraft. They were originally designed and built in France by Gustave Delage. The aircraft was often referred to as the Bebe.

They were deployed in both France and the Dardanelles. In the Dardanelles they were one of the first true fighter aircraft used by the British Royal Flying Corps. and the Royal Naval Air Service.

The Nieuport 11 was extremely maneuverable and able to gain air superiority over German aircraft ending the so-called "Fokker Scourge." During the Battle of Verdun in February 1916, the aircraft was responsible for the infliction of heavy casualties on the Germans.

The fighter was armed with a single Hotchkiss or Lewis machine-gun firing above the propeller from the top wing. Some of the aircraft were equipped with up to eight rockets on their outboard struts which were used against enemy observation balloons.

The tiny Nieuport 11 was neither a monoplane nor biplane. It fell into a class of 1 1/2 wing aircraft called sesquiplane. A sesquiplane has a lower wing that is less than half the area of the upper wing.

Balsa USA rc Nieuport 11.

Radio Control Airplanes:

Pictured above is the rc Nieuport 11 from a Balsa USA kit. Wingspan of the radio control airplane is 73". Balsa USA recommends .90 - 1.20 4c or 23 cc gasoline engines to power their rc airplane.

In the picture below is the prototype build Nieuport 11 RC built by Peter Rake. The rc airplane will eventually be offered as a kit from Manzano Laser Works. Wing span of the radio control airplane is 33". Power for the rc Nieuport 11 is by a speed 400 motor.  The motor of the radio control airplane is geared 2.33:1.  The RC Airplane is pulled by a 10 x 6 propeller.

The second picture down is the Proctor Enterprise rc Nieuport 11 built from their kit. The radio control airplane has a wing span of 61.25". Recommended engines for the RC Airplane are .70 - .80 four cycle.

The AMA has a number of rc Nieuport 11 plans for sale. The radio control airplanes have spans from 24” through 37”. Although the RC Airplane plans show engine power, they can probably be adapted for motor power.

The last picture on this page is of the rc Nieuport 11 by Lichti of RC Groups.  The RC Airplane was converted to radio control from a Guillow free flight kit.  Wing span of the RC Airplane is 24".  The Nieuport 11 rc is 1/12 scale. Although the RC Airplane was originally intended for rubber or engine power, Lichti converted his radio control airplane to electric power.

We would appreciate any additional information about the rc Nieuport 11, so please email us us about it.
