The most produced fighter aircraft in the world, about 35,000 Messerschmitt Bf-109 aircraft were manufactured.

Production of the Messerschmitt Bf-109 began during 1936. The redesignation of Bayerische Flugzeugwerke to Messerschmitt has led to the aircraft being called the Messerschmitt Me-109 although the official German Air Force designation remained the Messerschmitt Bf-109. However, during World War II, the German government often referred to the aircraft as the Messerschmitt Me-109 and both designations are acceptable.

Early in WW Two the Messerschmitt Bf-109 dominated over the British Hurricane, plus Polish and French aircraft. Later, in battles over Britain, the Messerschmitt Bf-109 met its equal in the British Supermarine Spitfire. Due to its short range the Messerschmitt Bf-109 was unable to escort Luftwaffe bombers far in to Britain. The short range of the Messerschmitt Bf-109 aircraft was a significant contributor to the defeat of the Germans in the Battle of Britain.

The Messerschmitt Bf-109F began replacing the E model in November of 1940. The F series had a more powerful engine and additional streamlining for greater speed.

The Messerschmitt Bf-109F accounted for over fifty percent of the single engine fighter aircraft engaged in the June 1941 primary German attack of Russia.

The Messerschmitt Bf-109 was the major Luftwaffe fighter of WW Two, fighting on all fronts. The Messerschmitt Bf-109 remained the most produced German fighter even after the superior FW-190 began replacing it.

The Messerschmitt Bf-109 was flown by Erich Hartmann, the top scoring ace of all time with 352 confirmed victories. The Messerschmitt Bf-109 is the only aircraft that Hartmann would accept to fly for Germany in all of World War II.

Hans-Joachim Marseille, flying a Messerschmitt Bf-109, achieved 158 victories over North Africa, including 17 victories on one day alone.

After the end of World War II the Messerschmitt Bf-109 was manufactured in Czechoslovakia through 1949. The Spanish manufactured the Messerschmitt Bf-109 through 1958.

Radio Control Airplanes:

Pictured above is a Messerschmitt Bf-109 RC Airplane from a Meister Scale kit. The radio control airplane was built by Tom Lamar and has a wing span of 102". Meister Scale recommends 3.2 - 4.4 ci gas engines for their RC Airplane. Weight of the Bf-109 Meister Scale 102" radio control airplane can be from 25 to 35 lbs.

Meister Scale also has a kit for a 84" wing span Messerschmitt Bf-109 RC Airplane. Weight of their radio control airplane is from 16 - 20 lbs. Recommended engines to power the Bf-109 RC Airplane are 1.8 glow or 2.3 - 3.0 gas.

The picture immediately below is of Dennis Wick and his 102" wing span Messerschmitt Bf-109 radio control airplane, also from a Meister Scale kit.

The second picture below is of yet another 102" wing span Messerschmitt Bf-109 Meister Scale RC Airplane. John Muzio is the builder of this radio control airplane.

You can find a 1/4 scale Messerschmitt Bf-109 RC Airplane kit from American Eagle. Their radio control airplane has a 98" wing span. All up weight of the Bf-109 RC Airplane is from 28 to34 lbs.with recommended power a Zenoah 62 or Sachs 4.2 and up.

Modeltech has a Messerschmitt Bf-109 ARF radio control airplane as shown in the last picture below. The RC Airplane has a wing span of 45". Modeltech recommends a .25 - .36 2c engine to power their radio control airplane.

There are lots of Messerschmitt Bf-109 RC Airplanes to choose from. You can find everything from slope soarer radio control airplanes to giant scale RC Airplanes to park flyer radio control airplanes, and electric or gas propelled RC Airplanes.

If you have a favorite Messerschmitt Bf-109 radio control airplane, please email us about it. Do you know of plans, a kit or ARF of the Bf-109 RC Airplane you can recommend? We would like to hear about those radio control airplanes too.

Rick Lindholm of Chino, CA writes:
I have been flying the Modeltech Messerschmitt Bf-109 ARF radio control airplane for about a month. Although the Bf-109 RC Airplane covering fit well, I didn't care for the finish. I ended up covering the radio control airplane again so that it would look more authentic.

The fuselage of the RC Airplane is very strong and the radio control airplane is very well built overall. I equipped my Messerschmitt Bf-109 RC Airplane with a O.S. .25 FX engine which provides sufficient power. Takeoff for the radio control airplane at about half throttle is in around 25 feet. With the control throws in the recommended range, the RC Airplane felt a little too responsive for my taste. I could have moved the center of gravity of the radio control airplane a little forward, but instead I just used less control throws and dialed more exponential into my radio.

The Messerschmitt Bf-109 RC Airplane tracks straight and sure unless the winds get blowing. Landings should be with a little speed on, less the radio control Bf-109 drops a wing. I like to keep the power on until the RC Airplane settles on to the runway, then chop the power and apply up elevator to keep the tail down. Make sure you have a bit of runway in front of you while settling down, or the radio control airplane will soon run out. However, ground handling of the RC Airplane, even at high speeds is good, with no tendency to nose over.

The Modeltech Messerschmitt Bf-109 radio control airplane is a good value for the money.
