The McDonnell F-4 Phantom scored the most U.S. fighter victories over Vietnam. It was the only aircraft flown by both the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds.

In 1962 the aircraft were used to enforce the Cuban blockade. On July 10, 1965, two F-4 Phantom aircraft downed two Mig aircraft, the first U. S. air victories of the Vietnam War.

On July 24, 1965, a Phantom was shot down by a surface to air missile over Vietnam. This was the first U.S. aircraft downed by an enemy missile in the Vietnam War.

From 1965 to1972, during the Vietnam War, over 100 MiG aircraft were destroyed by McDonnell F-4 Phantoms in the air, and on the ground.

On January 17, 1991, during Operation Desert Storm, F-4 Wild Weasel aircraft were used to suppress Iraqi guided missile fire.

The McDonnell F-4 Phantom is capable of performing in all weather conditions. It was first used by the US Navy as an interceptor, but also flew as a ground-support aircraft for the U. S. Marine Corps. Eventually it flew virtually every type of aircraft mission including fleet defense, attack, air superiority, long range strike, electronic counter measures, and reconnaissance.

Over 5,000 of the aircraft were produced in 15 different types before production ended in 1979. Over 2,600 went to the USAF and about 1,200 to the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. The remainder were sold to U.S. Allies. The USAF flew them into the 1990's.

A number of nations continue to fly upgraded Phantoms and it appears that they will probably still be active in air forces around the world through 2020.
