When the Martinsyde Buzzard first flew on May 14, 1918, it immediately impressed the Royal Air Force. A total of 1,450 aircraft were ordered as a result.
The Martinsyde Buzzard exhibited excellent maneuverability and speed. Many consider it the best aircraft overall to be built during World War I.
During World War I, various engine problems kept production of the Martinsyde Buzzard to about 370 aircraft.
After the war, the RAF canceled its order for the Martinsyde Buzzard. The completed aircraft from the canceled order were then exported to numerous countries around the world. The Soviet Union was known to have purchased at least 100 Martinsyde Buzzard aircraft.
Before they were retired in 1939, Martinsyde Buzzard aircraft flew primarily as trainers in the latter part of their careers.
