NOTE: RADIO CONTROL AIRPLANES ARE ON THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE PAGE.

The Ilyushin IL-2 was the backbone of Soviet anti-tank and ground attack units of World War II. They had massive integrated armour which protected all aircraft vital parts and formed a cocoon to protect its pilot.

Two forward firing high velocity cannons were the standard weapons of the Ilyushin IL-2. The aircraft had bomb bays which could carry up to 192 anti-tank bombs. Grenade launchers on board could fire small mines suspended from parachutes which could be dropped in the path of pursuing fighters.

When first deployed in 1941, the IL-2 was produced with a single seat. In 1942, a second crew member, manning a 12.7 mm machine gun from the rear cockpit, was added to give protection against attacking fighters.

The ground attack aircraft played a key part in the Soviet counter attack at Stalingrad. They flew over 1,000 sorties against German ground forces. At Kursk, they virtually wiped out all German tanks and artillery.

The Ilyushin IL-2 is the most produced aircraft in history, with over 36,000 of all types built.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Pictured above is the rc Ilyushin IL-2 for sale from TDM Models.  It is available as a short kit.  Plans. are also sold separately. Wingspan is 34" and length is 27". TDM recommends either an AXI 2212/20 or Mega 16/15/6 motor. It has an all up weight from 24 to 28 oz.

Pilots report the TDM Models rc Ilyushin IL-2 radio control airplane equipped with the recommended AXI motor has a great rate of climb. Loops can be accomplished with just over 1/2 throttle. Stalls are very predictable and it is easy to land.

The first two pictures immediately below are of Tuomas Pietinen and his scratch built rc Ilyushin IL-2 constructed from blue foam. It has a wingspan of 60".  Tuomas uses a LRK 35015 motor turning a 10 x 5 propeller for power. All up weight is about 3 3/4 lbs.

The third picture below is of a rc Ilyushin IL-2 built from Radio Control Modeler plans. The plans are by David P. Andersen. The rc airplane uses primarily balsa and ply for construction. Suggested power are engines from .90 to 1.08.

Hobby-Place.net has a page with a picture of a rc Ilyushin IL-2 kit on it. No wingspan, length, weight, or power types are shown except that is it 1/12 scale.

Please email us if you have seen a rc Ilyushin IL-2 radio control airplane that should be shown here.
