The HondaJet is produced by the Honda Aircraft Co. in the United States and Canada. Its concept originated in March of 1986 when the company began development of a compact business jet.
Design concepts of the new aircraft included corporate in house production of its own engines. They were to be low emission, economical, quiet, easy to maintain, and have a high power to weight ratio.
Perhaps the most unique feature of the HA-420 is the positioning of its engines above the wing. Small business jets commonly have their engines mounted on the aft fuselage of the aircraft.
The above wing engine position was found to substantially reduce drag. It also eliminated the need for fuselage reinforcement in the engine area. The net results was in excess of thirty percent more interior room than similar small business jets.
Ultra low weight, yet strong composites are used extensively in the aircraft fuselage. Laminar flow wings and front fuselage combine for additional drag reduction. This produced an aircraft that is said to burn some 30% less fuel per mile than other aircraft of its class.
The HondaJet features an all glass Garmin instrument cockpit. Interior design is said to be ergonomically planned to be among the most comfortable and efficient environments possible.
Passengers ride in ultra comfort with individual overhead controls for air conditioning, and entertainment systems.
The HondaJet was first shown to the public in July 2005 at the Oshkosh Air Show. U.S. orders commenced in September of 2006 with European orders being written starting in May of 2008.
To date over 100 HondaJet aircraft have been ordered with the first deliveries anticipated in late 2011. Production is anticipated to be around 70 aircraft per year.
HondaJet announced that a flight simulator will be available for pilot training to concur with their first aircraft deliveries at the end of 2011.
