The Hawker Hurricane was essentially a Hawker Fury monoplane. In fact, that is how they were first known.
The first models were even produced with fabric covered wings. However, it wasn't long after their introduction that metal wings became standard.
In December of 1937 the first Hawker Hurricane aircraft were deployed with combat squadrons. They were the first British aircraft capable of 300 mph + speeds. They proved so successful that the RAF requested more production than their
factory could handle. Eventually Gloster Aircraft began producing aircraft to help make up the shortfall.
There were more Hawker Hurricane aircraft than other fighters when World War II broke out. They were particularly effective against German bombers.
The Mk II model, that was deployed in September of 1940, was equipped with a two stage engine supercharger, enabling better high altitude performance.
Hawker Hurricanes were armed with up to twelve .303 machine guns. The Mk 11C, introduced in April of 1941, had four 20 mm cannons. The Mk 11D was armed with two 40 mm anti-tank cannons.
Other versions were produced as night fighters and for the Royal Navy. Naval aircraft had fittings for catapult launches as well as tail hooks.
The Hawker Hurricane was a pilot favorite. They reported that it could take a great deal of punishment, and was a steadier gun platform with better over the nose
visibility than many other fighter aircraft. Royal Air Force Hurricanes flew until January 1947.
