Giles 202

The Giles 202 is a two seat kit built aircraft with a four cylinder engine, designed by Richard Giles, and manufactured by Akrotech Aviation. Giles also designed a single seat four cylinder engine aircraft and a single seat six cylinder engine aircraft. Although the kits are no longer produced, Dent Air Co. supplies replacement parts.

The Lycoming four cylinder engine fitted to the Giles 202 is usually modified to produce additional power. *The aircraft has a continuous roll rate of about 500 degrees per second, said to be the most of any aircraft in the world.

Flying the aircraft is said to be a very pleasant experience. Pilots remark that the control feel is light in all flight aspects and that the aircraft is easy to land. Because the Giles 202 is a tail dragger, forward visibility is limited.

One of the best known Giles 202 aircraft is flown by Matt Hall. In 2005, flying the aircraft, he won the New South Wales Aerobatic Trophy. It was during the same year that the aircraft began performing at air shows.

A total of over twenty Giles 202 aircraft were produced.

* We received the following email from Alan Norris:
"In the Most category you state:  "This aircraft has a roll rate of about 500 degrees per second, said to be the most of any aircraft in the world: Giles 202"  The Douglas A4 Skyhawk has a roll rate of 720 degrees per second (numerous websites quote this), however it appears at this rate only two rolls are possible."

Thank you very much for writing to us Alan.
