Fokker Dr.1 Triplane aircraft were ordered into production early in 1917. The aircraft became operational by October of 1917. Soon thereafter it was grounded due to structural weakness in the wing spars. Wings were checked and, if necessary, rebuilt.  It was quickly flying again.

The Fokker Dr.1 Triplane is one of the most recognizable and famous aircraft of World War I. Dr. stands for Dreidecker, or 3 wings. It is the aircraft most associated with Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Barron. However, another German ace, Lt. Carl Jacobs, had more Fokker Dr.1 victories than von Richthofen, with a total of forty one.

When flying the Fokker Dr.1 Triplane, pilots found an aircraft of great maneuverability. However, the three wings produced an abundance of drag, hindering top speed. Other front line fighters, therefore, had dive, straight and level flight advantages over it. By May of 1918, it was outclassed by numerous front line aircraft, and withdrawn from service.

A total of 320 Fokker Dr. 1 Triplanes were built.
