Among the primary training aircraft that aspiring pilots from Canada, England and the United States trained in during World War II, the Fairchild PT-19 was a favorite.

The PT-19 was one of the world's first monoplane training aircraft. Its ruggedness and ease of handling, both in the air and on the ground, made it ideally suited for the job.

Flying the PT-19 starts with lifting the control lock from the stick. On an aircraft of its age, you want to be sure that all controls are moving properly. Due to the fabric and thin plywood covering of the aircraft, it is wise to ensure that all is intact.

To be sure of a smooth start of the engine, it is necessary to turn the propeller through six full revolutions to redistribute oil that has pooled in its cylinders. The next step is to climb into the roomy aircraft cockpit. The bare metal floor under the front seat is a quick reminder that this is a military aircraft with a single purpose.

The elevator trim is on a crank. The position must be verified visually. Generally it will need two up clicks for a single pilot and one additional click for a guest on board.

To start the engine it is necessary to build up about 3 psi of fuel pressure. This is done by actuating the full pump lever several times. Once the engine comes to life there will probably be a belch of blue smoke and all the odors that accompany a war bird of this vintage.

There is no problem with forward visibility in the PT-19. However, on the ground the aircraft is slow to respond to turning inputs and turns must be anticipated to be executed properly. For tight turns a hard, quick push of a rudder pedal is necessary.

The engine should be run up with the brakes engaged to ensure it is developing full power. Now is the time to check that engine temperature is within the proper operating range.

Heading down the runway during takeoff produces gentle acceleration. However, once the tail leaves the runway, the aircraft seems to speed up a bit. The PT-19 will gently lift off at around 70 mph and settle into a climb at about 10 more mph. There is a lot of aircraft for its engine to pull around, so climbing is done at a leisurely rate.

Once leveled off at altitude, the excellent cockpit visibility from a front seat placed at the wing's leading edge becomes apparent. The surprisingly quick response of the aircraft to minimal control pressures is very pleasant. In their prime, PT-19 aircraft could be used for aerobatics.

There is nothing dramatic about stalls. They are induced with a little back stick pressure and getting the flying speed down to around 60 MPH. Applying throttle and dropping the nose to bring the aircraft speed above 80 mph will have the aircraft flying again. If a wing does drop, just a touch of rudder will quickly level it.

When its time to land, throttling back to around 80 mph will settle the PT-19 into a good approach. At idle the aircraft will descend quite quickly. Being ready with some throttle before touching down will stop the descent and settle the aircraft onto the runway. The landing gear of the PT-19 are designed to help absorb some of those not too perfect beginner landings.

During the landing roll out the tail wheel will quickly settle onto the runway. The best technique for bleeding off speed once it settles down is to pull the stick back.

Some 6,400 Fairchild PT-19 aircraft of all types were produced. Over eighty continue to fly to this date.
