The Republic F-84 Thunderjet was the first U.S. fighter to be produced after the end of World War II. It was also
the first USAF fighter capable of carrying nuclear weapons. The Strategic Air
Command used the Thunderjet as a fighter escort for their heavy bombers.
Thunderjets were the first U.S. fighters capable of air to air refueling. As a demonstration of the USAF long
range jet fighter capabilities, Republic F-84 Thunderjets flew non stop from
Turner AFB, Georgia, U.S.A. to RAF Lakenheath, U.K. using air to air refueling.
The flight, during August of 1953, set a single engine jet fighter distance
record of 4,485 miles.
During the Korean War the F-84 was initially used as a bomber escort. Later missions included
ground attack. On May 15, 1953, F-84 Thunderjets knocked out North Korean
dams causing a massive loss of electrical power. Before the Korean war ended, Thunderjets completed over 86,400 missions,
dropping over 50,000 tons of
ordnance. F-84 Thunderjet pilots claimed victories or hits on 105 North Korean jets.
Over 2,000 Thunderjets were supplied to U.S. allies before production ended. They continued to fly until 1971.
A total of 7,524 Republic F-84 Thunderjets of all types were produced.
All the F-84 Thunderjet rc airplanes we know of are shown on this page. If you have information of any others, please email us.
