Highly aerobatic Extra aircraft are designed by Walter Extra. He started the Extra Aircraft Company, located in Germany, in 1980. Extra 330 series aircraft are the winners of the 2008 German Aerobat trophy and numerous other competitions.

Today the company produces the Extra 200 and Extra 300 series of high performance aircraft as well as the six seat EA-500.

Pilots of Extra 300 series aircraft praise the coordination of stick and peddles which smoothly blend together controls of all flight axis. Acceleration, especially with the Lycoming Thunderbolt 580 engine, is beyond what most first time Extra pilots expect. The aircraft are especially engineered for the pilot who wants to take his aircraft to the edge of its performance envelope. While the aircraft is being thrown around the sky at rates up to 10 G's, the pilot is in complete control. Stalls are totally predictable and straight ahead without any tendency to snap roll. Aileron rolls are blindingly fast, yet perfectly controlled.

Perhaps the best known of the aircraft is the single seat Extra 330 SC. Its development started in 2005 as a one of a kind custom build created for air show performances. A 100 lb. weight saving was realized from the fuselage of an Extra 300 through the use of strong, light weight composite materials. To increase control response the aircraft's center of gravity was moved 14 inches to the rear. The rudder and elevators were given more throw and the entire tail of the aircraft was modified to achieve better aerobatic response.

The modified aircraft was so successful that it was decided to produce the Extra 330 SC. While the air frame and tail section were essentially unchanged from its one of a kind predecessor, the wings were redesigned. Further weight savings were realized with the use of space age materials throughout the aircraft. The ailerons were modified to achieve roll rates of up to 420 degrees per second and have the ability to instantly stop rolls. This is particularly noticeable while observing the aircraft perform point rolls. A new 315 h.p. engine and propeller were fitted to the aircraft. Fuel capacity in the fuselage tank was increased from 14 to 27 gallons.

The results is an aircraft that not only continues, but exceeds the Extra tradition of high performance. The new engine and propeller combination, along with a lower overall weight, enables the aircraft to be pulled through sequential maneuvers at its best maneuvering speeds to achieve optimum performance. The Extra 330 SC can also thrill air show crowds with tumbling maneuvers that are second to none.
