The aircraft from which the Dauphin Helicopter was derived was an 8 passenger single engine helicopter. Today, the Dauphin Helicopter has developed into the twin engine, Fenstron equipped, utility helicopter that serves in a multitude of capacities around the world. A version of the Dauphin Helicopter is also used by the military.
Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Dauphin Helicopter is its Fenstron faired tail rotor. Its primary purpose is to protect the rotor when maneuvering at low altitudes and in tight spaces. It is a safety feature for people in the vicinity of the helicopter when the tail rotor is operating. There is also a significant reduction in tail rotor noise.
Recently the Dauphin Helicopter has received upgraded digitally controlled main engines that provide almost one fifth more power plus faster throttle response. The end results is better performance at high altitudes, on warmer days, and when carrying maximum loads.
The United States Coast Guard operates 96 of the Dauphin Helicopter around the country. They are specially equipped with a infra-red search system, all weather avionics, a 2,640 lb. capacity winch, over the starboard door, a searchlight, first aid gear, and a stretcher. In the event of a water ditching, the Dauphin Heicopter is equipped with pop out inflatable flotation gear.
In addition, their tail boom is water proof.
A total of over 800 of the Dauphin Helicopter of all types have been manufactured to date.
The pictures above and below are of the rc Dauphin Helicopter from XHeli. It is 17" long with a rotor diameter of 13".
Two Speed 180 size motors power it. Included is a radio, receiver, servos, batteries and
chargers.
In the last picture below is the rc Dauphin Helicopter from Hirobo. Fuselage length of the rc helicopter is 58 1/2" and rotor diameter is 61". For power you will need from .61 to .80 engines. Ready to fly weight should be about 13 1/4 lbs.
