In 1978 the Brazilian government called for a replacement to their aging basic trainer aircraft. The response was the turboprop Tucano from Embraer, designated the EMB 312, that first flew in 1980.
The advanced training Tucano has a very jet-like feel with similar controls, and maneuverability. That was purposefully done so that future military pilots could easily advance to jet trainers.
Instructors appreciate the excellent visibility provided by a raised rear seat, enabling a view over the student and the front of the Tucano.
In addition to Brazil, the Tucano is used by air forces around the world, primarily Argentina, Egypt, France, and Great Britain.
Besides training, the Tucano is equipped with pylons and can be armed with missiles and bombs for the light attack role. The Brazilian Air Force aerobatic team, Esquadrilha da Fumaca, features the aircraft.
The United States has purchased the latest attack version of the Tucano, the A-29 Super Tucano for operations in Afghanistan.
