The idea for the German built Dornier Do 328 turboprop was conceived in 1984 as a speedy thirty seat commuter transport airliner that could operate from smaller airports. A prototype first flew in 1991 with deliveries beginning in 1993.

When the Do 328 was introduced, it had the widest cabin of its class. It was among the first aircraft of its type to take advantage of composite materials for both weight reduction and strength. The large propellers provide more than ample thrust. Its cockpit was all glass equipped. The aircraft achieved impressive take off, climb, and overall speed performance.

Through the years the original design was improved with more powerful engines, higher payloads, and better handling.

Five Do 328 aircraft have been used for search and rescue by Australia since 2005. They are able to fly day or night, in all weather conditions. Their equipment includes a special search radar, FLIR, and rescue equipment which can be dropped from the aircraft.

A total of 112 Dornier 328 turboprop aircraft of all types were produced through 1999. We are told that a market overcrowded with similar aircraft, and a less than impressive reliability rate led to its relatively short production run.

A jet powered version of the aircraft, called the Dornier 328J, was certified in July 1999. A total of 83 jet aircraft were delivered before production ended in 2005.

The picture above is of the Dornier Do 328 by Rodel Modellbaum.  It has a wingspan of 70" with a length of 69" and is made from styrofoam. Power comes from a pair of Speed 600 motors. Although no longer produced, we have seen the model for sale on eBay and other sites.

The first picture below is of the Dornier Do 328 by Wilfred Therurlin. It has a 86 1/2" wingspan and a length of 88".  It has a foamy fuselage with wings which are balsa built up. Power comes from Ultra 930/10 motors turning EDF units. Weight is around 10 lbs.

The second picture down is of the Dornier Do 328 from Simprop.  It has a fiberglass fuselage with wood over foam wings.  Wingspan is 52", length is 47", and weight is about 3 1/2 lbs.  A pair of Speed 400 type motors can be used for power.

The third picture down is of the Dornier Do 328 from Scorpio Models. It is a park flyer foamy with a wingspan of 37" and a length of 27".  Power comes from a pair of electric motors. Weight is around 17 oz.

The last picture on this page is of the Dornier Do 328 from Windrider.  It is a foamy with a 60" wingspan that can be powered by electric motors turning propellers, 70 mm EDF units, or flown as a slope soarer. Its weight will be around 2 1/2 lbs as a slope soarer.
