The Chance Vought F-4U Corsair was the first United States production fighter aircraft to exceed 400 mph in level flight. The aircraft was engineered by Rex Beisel and Igor Sikorsky. At 13’ 2” diameter, it sported the largest propeller ever fitted to a single engine aircraft.
Originally only the U.S.M.C. flew the F4U because the U.S. Navy considered the aircraft unsuitable for carrier operations. This was due to the F4U’s rearward cockpit placement, limiting visibility over the nose of the aircraft, high engine torque, and a tendency to spring on landing. Glowing reports from U.S.M.C. pilots about the performance of the F4U against enemy aircraft, particularly the Japanese Zero, made the U.S. Navy reconsider their original decision.
The WW II record of the F4U was 2,140 enemy aircraft downed in air-to-air combat vs. a loss of 189 F4U aircraft. During WW II, F4U aircraft flew for the U.S. Navy, U.S. Marine Corps, the Royal New Zealand Air Force and the Royal Navy.
Perhaps the best known F4U pilot was USMC Maj. “Pappy” Boyington who scored a total of 28 victories over enemy aircraft. He was the highest scoring USMC ace of WW II.
Before WW II ended, F4U aircraft flew a total of over 64,000 missions.
The F4U also served in Korea in a ground attack role, flying 80% of all U.S.N. and U.S.M.C. missions in the first year of the war.
The French used the F4U in Indochina against the Viet Minh between 1952 and 1954.
It is said that a F4U could endure more damage than the P-47 Thunderbolt, climb, roll and maneuver with the best fighters of the day, and carry a heavier bomb load than some medium twin engine bombers. Pilots said that the F4U could out turn and out dive just about any enemy aircraft.
Over 12,500 F4U aircraft of all types were built before production ended in 1952.
