The Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet was the world's largest passenger jet from 1970 to 2005 and remains the world's fastest operating jet liner. The Airbus A380 is now the world's largest mass produced aircraft.

The latest 747-400 aircraft have drag reducing winglets and an upgraded flight deck. They are the world's fastest airliners, with a Mach .855 cruising speed.

The 747-400 Freightliner has twice the cargo capacity and double the range of other cargo carrying aircraft. The 747 Freightliner fleet handles over one half of all the air cargo shipped around the world.

The 747-400 is fully digitized with all the flight deck information displayed on CRT's. All major aircraft systems have double redundancy.

New avionics are able to lower crew work load by 50%. Switches and instruments on newer models are less than half of those on prior models.

An automatic, hands-free radar system on the Boeing 747-8 will have a range of about 370 miles and be able to inform the crew of real time weather conditions, including atmospheric hazards. Previous systems could only provide a measure of relative humidity.

Wing length on the 747-8 has been increased by about 15 feet and the wings incorporate six foot winglets. Although the wings are longer, high strength alloys keeps their weight down to less than previous 747 models.

New brakes for the sixteen main landing gears on the 747-8 using structural carbon save about 1,800 lbs. over other landing gear systems.

The 747-8 new GE engines are quieter, have less emissions and have better fuel economy.

The new Boeing 747-8 model includes the 747-8 Intercontinental passenger aircraft and the 747-8 Freighter.

Cargolux, Luxembourg, has ordered ten 747-8 Freighters and is scheduled to take delivery in 2009. It also holds the purchase rights for ten additional Freighters.

Nippon Cargo Airlines, Japan, has ordered eight Freighters for delivery in 2009. It holds the purchase rights for six more Freighters.

Combined orders from these two companies total approximately US$5.0 billion.

Boeing says that compared to the A380, the 747-8 will operate for 22% less per trip and their 747-8F Freightliner will operate for 20% less per trip.

Radio Control Airplanes:

Pictured above and immediately below is the magnificent Boeing 747-400 RC Airplane built by Peter Michel. The radio control airplane has a wing span of 177" and a weight of about 132 lbs. Powering the RC Airplane are four Sky-Pipe N80 engines.

In the second picture below is a Estes Boeing 747 radio control airplane done in Air Force One colors. The Estes RC Airplane has 2-channel controls, steering the radio control airplane by differential thrust to the four engines. Wing span of the Estes RC Airplane is 43" and power is by 4 unspecified type EDF engines.

We have seen a number of conversions of the Estes 747 radio control airplane to four or more channel control. RC Airplane modelers have added scale landing gear and different color schemes for realism.

Tom McElhinney wrote to tell us about plans for two 747 radio control airplanes.  The larger 747 RC Airplane can be found at Parkjets Plans and is shown in the last picture on this page.  The radio control airplane has a wing span of 51" and a length of 61".  Power for the RC Airplane comes from four 55 mm GWS fan units.

The smaller of the two 747 radio control airplanes can be found in a posting to RC Groups from Brett.  The radio control airplane is made from Depron foam.  Wing span of the RC Airplane is 33"
and length is 31 1/2".  Four GWS 30 mm fans power the radio control airplane.

Thank you very much for the information Tom.

If you have a favorite 747 RC Airplane or can recommend any plans, ARFs, or kits of a 747 radio control airplane please let us know.
