Flying the Eurocopter Aerospatiale Gazelle SA 341 and the Westland Lynx helicopters, the British Blue Eagles have been performing since 1968.

The British Blue Eagles helicopter display team was originally comprised of training personnel from the School of Army Aviation. The helicopters utilized were also from the school.

The first helicopters used by the Blue Eagles were five model Bell-47 Sioux. The team had six dedicated pilots that were transferred from active duty squadrons. Display shows were performed starting in early February and continuing through October of each year.

British army helicopter pilots were not trained for flying in tight formations, therefore in order to perform on the team, eight weeks of special training was required.

After several years it became apparent that the costs of a helicopter display team were not affordable, and the Blue Eagles broke up. However, unpaid volunteers soon had the team together again.

Initially the Blue Eagles flew a variety of rotor and fixed wing aircraft before settling on the two helicopter types currently used in their displays.  To date the Blue Eagles team is an all-volunteer unit.

In 1992 the Blue Eagles acquired four Westland Linx helicopters. In 1993 a single Linx was retained and the remaining Linx helicopters were replaced with less costly to operate SA 341 helicopters.

Radio Control Helicopters:

Pictured above is the SA 341 RC Helicopter by Hirobo.  The radio control helicopter is for .60 size engines.  It appears that Hirobo may no longer sell the RC Helicopter.  However, there have been quite a few recent postings for the radio control helicopter on eBay.

The first picture below is of the Westland Lynx RC Helicopter by Starwood.  The radio control helicopter is sold as a fuselage.  Dimensions of the RC Helicoper are 1/6 scale and 84" long.

The next picture below is of the Vario Westland Lynx radio control helicopter.  The RC Helicopter is 67" long.  Power for the radio control helicopter is by a 11.5 cc engine.

The final picture on this page is of a great looking Westland Lynx RC Helicopter.  The radio control helicopter was built from a Vario kit by Iain Erskin.
