Bell UH-1 helicopter development dates back to 1955. With updates, this utility helicopter is still in popular use today. Although officially named the Iroquois, it is best known as the Huey.
Huey helicopters were extensively used during the Vietnam war where over 2,500 of the 7,000 helicopters deployed were lost. They served as transports and gunships in support of ground troops.
Recent upgrades to the helicopter include more powerful engines, wider rotor blades and increased fuel capacity.
Today UH-1 helicopters are used around the world. The California Dept. of Forestry employs a total of 11 of the helicopters. The helicopters used by the CDF are fitted with either 324 gallon foam/water buckets or a fixed 360 gallon foam/water tank.
Approximately 16,000 Bell UH-1 helicopters of all types were produced.
