The Bell AH-1 Super Cobra is an upgraded twin engine version of the original Cobra helicopter. It is flown by the United States Marine Corps, Iran, South Korea, Taiwan, and Turkey.
Supra Cobra helicopters fly from land bases and the decks of naval vessels. They are designed to fly just above ground level, using terrain and trees for cover.
Super Cobra's are quick and maneuverable, making them a pilot favorite. The helicopters
can be used to neutralize enemy troops, tanks and artillery to pave the way for Marine assault units.
In addition to the attack role, the Super Cobra is used as an escort for assault helicopters.
The Super Cobra can be quickly rearmed. The TOW and Hellfire anti tank missiles it carries are attached directly to the helicopter with their launch tubes. It can also be equipped with Sidewinder missiles for air to air combat, and unguided rockets.
The Super Cobra crew of two work in tandem. The pilot sits high in the cockpit, enabling him to scan all around and ahead of the gunner who sits forward and below in the cockpit. At night the gunner is aided by night vision sights.
The helicopter is equipped with special cable cutting blades above and below the cockpit. This is a necessity given the low altitudes at which the Super Cobra operates.
A three barrel 20 mm cannon in the nose of the helicopter has a firing rate of 675 rounds per minute. It is in a turret that can swivel 110 degrees on either side of the helicopter's nose.
During operation Desert Storm, Super Cobra helicopters flew over 1,200 sorties. During a single mission they destroyed over 60 enemy tanks.
A total of over 1,270 AH-1 Super Cobra twin engine helicopters have been produced to date.
