The Bell 206 is among the most accomplished helicopters ever built. It is used for EMS, Homeland Security, training of armed forces pilots, as a crop sprayer, corporate transport, as an air tanker and spotter helicopter, an air ambulance, by police departments, for search and rescue, and as a news helicopter.

For fighting blazes the Bell 206 can be equipped with a 780 gallon "Bambi" bucket. Depending on how near the retardant base is, it can often drop more retardant than a fixed wing aircraft in the same period of time.

A military prototype helicopter first flew in 1962.  The Bell 206 as we know it was introduced in 1971. Pilots found an agile helicopter with maneuverability to impress air show crowds, yet easy enough to fly to make a good trainer. Controls are hydraulically operated, with autopilot, auto stabilizer, and IFR equipment optionally available.

The engine and all mechanical elements of the Bell 206 are located at the top of the fuselage. This, plus a patented anti-vibration system, helps isolate the passenger cabin from noise and vibrations. The interior is roomy with access through wide cabin doors, and visibility is excellent. Baggage capacity is excellent, with access to the compartment through a separate door. Commercial operators appreciate its low operating cost.

By 1974 a prototype was introduced with a more powerful engine, bigger rotor, more fuel capacity, and longer fuselage allowing room for seven passengers.  It went on to become the North American light helicopter sales leader.

In 1977 the Jet Ranger III took to the sky. Primary improvements over prior models were increased engine power and an improved tail rotor system. In 1981, a military variant, the Texas Ranger was introduced. Initially the helicopter was powered by a 317 hp. engine, but newer models have increased engine power to 650 hp.

Agusta in Italy, produces the Bell 206 under license for the European market, while Bell Helicopter Textron, Canada produces aircraft for the Americas.
