In the Guinness Book of Records, the Antonov An-225 is shown as the world's heaviest aircraft. However, its wing span is less than the Spruce Goose.  The Antonov An-225 is larger than the A-380 and the C-5.

The Antonov An-225 was designed for the Soviet space program as a space shuttle and rocket booster transport. One Antonov An-225 is currently in service with a second only partially completed due to the collapse of the Soviet Union. The  Antonov An-225 aircraft is available for the transportation of heavy freight both on its back and internally. Completion of the second Antonov An-225 aircraft and construction of more depends upon the demand for huge heavy cargo lifters.

The Antonov An-225 is an adaptation of the An-124 with a longer fuselage, two additional engines and a 32 wheel heavy duty landing gear.

The Antonov An-225 was shown to the international public for the first time at the 1989 Paris Air Show. At the time it carried the Soviet space shuttle on its back. The shuttle had successfully orbited the earth twice during an unmanned flight on November 15, 1988. Lack of financing forced an end to the Soviet space shuttle program in 1993. The following year the Antonov An-225 was temporarily retired. The Antonov An-225 became operational again on May 7, 2001.

It is anticipated that the Antonov An-225 will be used for American and other countries space projects by transporting rockets and their parts. The cargo bay of the Antonov An-225 is large enough to hold a fully assembled aircraft fuselage.

The first commercial flight of the Antonov An-225 was for the delivery of over 215,000 meals to U.S. military personnel in Oman.

The U.S. government is currently considering a long term contract with Antonov Airlines for the additional production and use of one Antonov An-225

Radio Control Airplanes:

Pictured above and in the two pictures below is the magnificent scratch built Antonov An-225 RC Airplane by Hans Buhr. The wingspan of the radio control airplane is 11'5". Burh powers his Antonov An-225 RC Airplane with six Lehmer 2718/20 NL motors.

Sam Cocker scratch built a 20 foot wing span Antonov An-225 radio control airplane. In 1997 it was in the Guinness book of world records as the largest RC Airplane.

Jim Markham scratch built another Antonov An-225 radio control airplane. This Antonov An-225 RC Airplane had a 10 foot wing span and was powered by six Wemotec mini fans.

There were some postings in RC Groups from Hawker about a Antonov An-225 scratch built radio control airplane. The foam RC Airplane was powered by six EDF-50 fans, and weighed about 48 oz. However, even at that weight it seems the fans didn't have enough power to get the nice looking Antonov An-225 radio control airplane off of the ground. Hawker's RC Airplane is in the third picture down.

We don't know of any other Antonov An-225 radio control airplane plans, ARF's or kits.  If you have a favorite Antonov An-225 RC Airplane, please email us.
