The Antonov An-22 is the largest turboprop aircraft in the world. It is designed for parachute drops and to land troops plus heavy equipment on short, unimproved runways, close to front lines.

Numerous records involving huge payloads, speeds, and altitudes reached were set by the An-22. It has carried payloads as heavy as 220,500 lbs.

The An-22 has flown military missions throughout the former Soviet Union and in Bagram, Bosnia, Egypt, Kabul, Kandahar, and Syria.

An-22 aircraft have been involved in humanitarian efforts which include delivering relief supplies to Angola, Armenia, Chernobyl, Ethiopia, and Peru.

A total of 68 An-22 aircraft were produced of which some 40 continue to fly. When An-22 aircraft retire, their missions are being taken over by jet powered aircraft.
