NOTE: RADIO CONTROL AIRPLANES ARE ON THE BOTTOM HALF OF THE PAGE.
Albatros D. aircraft came in series D.I, D.II, D.III, D.V and D.Va. A progressively higher level of performance was achieved with each aircraft.
The aircraft were the only series of fighters produced throughout all of World War I starting with the introduction of the Series 1 in 1916.
The Albatros D was introduced in response to the British and French fighters. The fighters had ended the German dominance of the air at the start of the war. By early 1917 the Series I had helped the Germans in achieving a measure of air superiority once again.
The elliptical fuselage of the Series I was aerodynamically superior to those of earlier aircraft enabling higher top speeds. The wings were adapted from the earlier C. Series aircraft.
Series I aircraft employed the most powerful engines of their time ever fitted into a fighter aircraft. Two machine guns firing through the propeller gave the aircraft twice the armament of previous aircraft. About 50 Albatros D Series 1 aircraft were produced.
Series II aircraft were more maneuverable than their predecessors. The wings were made more rigid with the introduction of V struts between the upper and lower wings. Some 275 Series II aircraft were built.
The Series III aircraft featured improved downward visibility for its pilot. The sides of the fuselage were flat, covered with a thin plywood. It is estimated that 1,866 Albatros D Series III aircraft were manufactured.
The Series IV never got out of the prototype stage due to engine vibration that could not be solved.
The Series V, pictured above, had a more powerful engine, a more oval fuselage, and some additional streamlining, but were essentially similar to the Series III aircraft. A total of approximately 900 Albatros D Series V aircraft were produced.
The Series Va aircraft featured stronger wing spars and struts than earlier aircraft. Some minor changes to the fuselage were performed to improve rearward visibility. Approximately 1,612 Albatros D Series Va aircraft were built.

We received the following email: Hi, I've bought Bob Hutton rc 1/4 scale Albatross DVA drawings and I have
many doubts since the drawings lack some important details, most of all
wings incidences.
My question is : have you got any link to someone who has built and
flown this particular model, I mean the rc Albatross DVA built from Bob
Hutton drawings?
I really need to urgently find some modeler that has already built it
(and flown) so that I can ask directly more details.
Looking forward to receive some details,
Thank you very much for your attention,
Best regards, Denis Ferrari - Italy (denis.ferrari@fastwebnet.it)
