On August 18, 2008 a Agusta Westland AW 109 (formerly Agusta A109) Grand model helicopter completed a round the world record trip. The unmodified Agusta AW 109 helicopter set a new world speed record by completing the journey in 271 hours and one minute.  The Grand model of the AW 109 has an extended cabin with seating for an additional two passengers.

The AW 109 Hirundo (Swallow) is used in both civilian and military applications.  It is the best selling helicopter produced by Agusta. Among its functions are medical transport, police and sheriff, passenger and cargo hauler, high altitude rescue, maritime, patrol, battlefield support, recon, and electronic countermeasures.

Some 500 AW 109 helicopters of all types have been produced to date.
