The Aero L-159 ALCA (Advanced Light Combat Aircraft) is known for its ruggedness and reliability. It can trace its origins back to the well received line of Aero training aircraft. The ALCA replaced a number of older Czech aircraft. It is produced in one and two seat versions.
During recent NATO combat simulations, the ALCA was said to more than hold its own while dog fighting with aircraft of the United States Air Force and Navy.
The L-159 is about 20 inches longer than its predecessor, necessary in part, to house a new radar unit in the nose of the aircraft. It has a stronger structure to withstand extreme maneuvers, plus additional cockpit armor.
Ordnance payload has been increased by about 25% and engine thrust is increased from 3,800 lbs. to 6,300 lbs. New avionics includes a head up display, hands on throttle and stick, and a radar system capable of air to air and air to ground tracking.
Ordnance which the aircraft is capable of carrying includes air to air and air to ground missiles, plus guided and unguided bombs. It can be fitted with a 20 mm cannon, and a reconnaissance system, both carried in external pods. Defensive systems include the latest technology for both electronic and mechanical countermeasures.
L-159 aircraft are used to train new pilots, as ground attack, intercept and escort aircraft, and for reconnaissance. They often fly and train with the aircraft of other NATO member nations.
Aero has offered the L-159 for export to a number of countries. Thus far, sales have not materialized.
To date a total of 72 Aero L-159 ALCA aircraft of all types have been produced .
